50,000 Silver Dollar Bar, Haugan Montana

That’s it. We’re off on our adventure. It’s September 6, 2012, a Thursday and we are more than ready. We’ve been preparing to leave since June and finally it’s happening.

We started the day in Moses Lake, intending to make it further, but a mishap (which I will detail in another post) led us to end our day in Montana. If you haven’t read it already, check out that post.

After our crazy morning, we decided a stop at the $50,000 Silver Dollar Bar and Gift Shop in Montana was in order. Nestled along I-90, this unique gift shop has become a must-see for travelers with its quirky charm and fascinating history.

We arrived at the Silver Dollar Bar early in the evening and quickly learned there is a little free RV dry camping area behind the gift shop. We took advantage of the little gift and parked here. It was a relief after our previously mentioned mishap. The perfect spot to park our home on wheels for the night. After setting up, the kids eagerly jumped on their bikes, and rode on the little dirt road and trails behind the shop. Their laughter and joy filled the air as they zipped around, making the most of the freedom and escape from the pickup.

Inside the gift shop, which we’ve been to many times over the years, we enjoyed the array of souvenirs, local crafts, and, of course, silver dollars adorning the walls. The shop itself is one of the treasures of Montana, and we spent a solid hour browsing the unique items. I bought a rainbow maker (crystal) to add to the one hanging in my car and to commemorate the kickoff of our adventures.

As the day wound down, we treated ourselves to some huckleberry ice cream. Sitting outside the camper in our camp chairs with our cones, we enjoyed the crisp Montana evening, reflecting on the day’s adventures and saying a prayer of thanks for our safety.

The next morning, we packed up and hit the road early, continuing our adventure eastward. Our destination is Columbus, Ohio. There, we are thrilled to meet up with Author Doug Brown, for his book signing at the Columbus Comic-Con.

Looking back, our visit to the $50,000 Silver Dollar Bar was a needed reprieve this first day. Many would call it a slice of Americana. But I figure it was a nice chance to unwind, and an opportunity to create lasting memories with our family. If you’re ever traveling through Montana, I highly recommend making a pit stop at this iconic roadside attraction. Whether you’re browsing the gift shop, savoring some ice cream, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, it’s an experience you won’t forget.
