Mother’s Day is celebrated in the United States on the second Sunday of May. This day honors mothers and maternal figures, recognizing their contributions to families and society. Traditions often include giving cards, flowers, and gifts, as well as spending quality time with loved ones to express gratitude and affection.

The holiday was officially recognized in 1914, largely due to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, who sought to honor her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, and the broader role of mothers in society. However, Anna Jarvis later became critical of the holiday’s commercialization, believing it detracted from its original intent of heartfelt appreciation.

While not a federal holiday, Mother’s Day is widely observed across the country, with many families participating in various forms of celebration to honor the mothers in their lives.
